They don't need Santa Claus 1

Michael had just finished praying when he heard the door bell ring.

"Perfect timing." He whispered excitedly to himself

He was more than ready for today. He pulled on a blue and red colored T-shirt and went to answer the door

A chorus of "Merry Christmas!" greeted him as he threw the door open. There, standing on his front porch were the people that mattered most to him in the whole world. Emmanuel, his best friend since campus days; Grace, his very good friend who he was planning to propose to very soon, and her best friend Shade who had somehow managed to become very close to the group

"Welcome guys," Michael replied, mirroring their radiant smiles and shaking their hands. "Come on in.

They all had their nose masks on and he could see they were particular about keeping Covid-19 rules.

They caught up on what had been happening in each other's lives. Michael told them of his recent job as an auditor in a big accounting firm in Lekki. Emmanuel shared how God had pulled him out of debt three months ago. Grace talked about a new promotion she had gotten at work and Shade shared how her business had been going and how tough it was to be an entrepreneur in Lagos State

"Wow guys." Emmanuel heaved. "I can't believe we haven't seen each other in months. It's so good to be here and be up close and personal about our lives again.

"Yeah," Grace smiled. "This year was really tough, what with Covid-19 and all. I feel like this is the only time of the year it was possible for us to be together like this. You know?

"And that's all for the better since we kuku have an assignment to carry out for God during this period." Michael replied, rubbing his palms. "Who is ready for another episode of MEGS Christmas Eve?" He shouted

His friends clapped their hands in enthusiasm and whistled excitedly.

His smile grew wider. Two years ago, he and his friends had shared a burden that God had placed in his heart specifically for Christmas. God had told him that people didn't need Santa Claus during Christmas. What they truly wanted was joy and hope. The joy and hope of knowing God and having a personal relationship with Him and the hope that came from knowing that God still had His children out there who carried their candles to the darkness to give hope to the hopeless, smiles to the grieving and hurting, and balms to the wounded on life's road, even on Christmas day. MEGS CHRISTMAS EVE was born

Neither he nor his friends were rich people per se. They all had bills to pay and other things that called for their money and attention. But all through the year, they saved for this particular cause. And MEGS was an acronym formed from the first letter of all their names.

This year, it would not be much different. He and Emmanuel would go shopping for food items and wrapping paper, while Grace and her best friend would stay home and prepare delicious home cooked meals for the people they were going to reach out to. And when the guys returned, everyone would wrap gifts and they would pray for an hour before going to do what mattered to God the most; win souls

"No time to waste, guys" Shade said, standing up. "Let's get cracking. Emma the keys. I'll get the foodstuffs from the car so we can start cooking and you guys can go buy the other stuff.

As Emmanuel handed her his keys, Michael remembered something. "Do you guys have the list of items we need to buy?

Shade chuckled. "We do this every year and you guys still don't know the kinds of gifts people need on Christmas?

The guys laughed and shrugged. "We keep forgetting.

"Buy Bibles, five packs of bottled water, random sized sweaters, a few Christian books and novels, wrist watches, nose masks, bottles of sanitisers, then random packaged foods like Milo, Milk, Spaghetti, Salt, etc..." Grace said, counting off her fingers as Miichael's fingers flew over his phone's keypad, writing the items down

The guys were about leaving when Grace said, "You guys are still forgetting something.

They stopped dead in their tracks and looked at her.

"What's that?
