The JJJ promise.
Episode 2

The laughter that came from both of them was rich and fulfilling...

A month passed and the frustrations had not lessened and her sisters-in-law never ceased to pass biting comments or ask obnoxious questions about when she was going to get pregnant.
Sometimes, Blessing would take it all in and keep her cool, smiling and telling them 'very soon'. Other times she kept completely mute but raged inside her, waiting for one more provocation to empty the contents of her frustrated mind on them.

Today was one of the days disapointment seized her mind. She went to bed heavy-hearted and full of worry. The truth was that she was tired of waiting. Her Bible laid beside her on Samuel's side of the bed and she peeled her eyes off it. She wasn't in the mood to read it. She had read it so many times that the promises in it were sounding too good to be real. She replayed the days incidents in her mind, instead.

Her best friend, Funke had visited in the afternoon.
"Blessing!" Funke had shouted in her usual bubbly manner immediately Blessing had opened the door. She carried three shopping bags in her two hands, but she dropped them and drew Blessing into a warm hug.
Blessing had ushered her into the house, extremely happy for Funke's company. There was never a dull moment with her and she knew she needed to clear her mind from thinking too much.
"Ah ah," Funke remarked as she entered. "Blessing, so you live in a masterpiece as this and you've not invited me over all this while."

"Just look at you," Blessing replied sarcastically. "Do you even check your email at all? I have invited you countless times but madam banker is always too busy to notice."

"Wow!" Funke smiled. "This house is too big now and it's just you and Samuel."

Blessing tried her best not to see the other part of Funke's comment. The part that hinted at her lack of kids. But Funke noticed the cloud that settled on her face.

"I'm so sorry, Blessing. I didn't mean to sound... I wasn't... I, no..."

Blessing smiled sadly. "It's okay, Funke. I know. I'm becoming too sensitive to people's comments."

Funke settled on a leather chair, looking sadly at her best friend. "But, Blessing you don't have to go through this."

Blessing braced herself. She knew this was Funke entering 'counsellor mode.'

"There are lots of children out there in orphanages, waiting for the love of a mother. It's not a sin to adopt, Blessing. You're aging and you can pour all your love and resources into an abandoned baby, who life has left to fend for himself. Even if it's just one."

Now, in her bed, still wide awake, Blessing allowed the idea of adoption to really dwell in her mind. Yeah, it wasn't a sin to adopt and all she wanted was a child to call her own. Plus, she knew they could afford it. The only problem was Samuel... He wouldn't even hear of it. He wasn't in support of it at all. But the question that tugged at her mind was; "The JJJ promise. Was it in support of adoption? Did God have it in mind when He gave her that promise?"

"No!" Samuel entered the room, wide-eyed. He had fallen asleep while preparing a sermon in the study and he had had a dream. He didn't fully understand it, but he was sure of the scripture that came with it. It was Genesis 15:4; "And behold, the word of the Lord came to him saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir."

"Sweetheart," He asked with slitted eyes. "Are you by chance, considering adoption?"

Blessing's heart rate picked up. What kind of man knew her so well to know her thoughts...
