WHEN GIANTS FALL; WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR PRAYER WARRIOR.
Penultimate Episode.
Maybe it was because I no longer saw him during our fellowship weekly meetings or that he no longer came to the chapel like he used to or that a new prayer warrior had been appointed for the fellowship, that I realized that something was seriously wrong.
The other executives in the fellowship were mute about whatever was happening to Bro Charles and after thinking about it for a while, I figured it was probably the best thing to do.
But it didn't stop me from wondering exactly what happened to Bro Charles. Were his grades dropping? Was he sick? Could it be that things were not alright at the home front? What could make a prayer warrior who carried the Presence of God, go almost extinct from the fellowship?
Was I worried? Definitely. But I wasn't the only one. After fellowship meetings, I would overhear conversations about Bro Charles and his disappearance, and it always increased the burden in me to find out what happened to him. I prayed about it and allowed God guide me.
One day, I went to the library during one of my free periods and it was filled up. Exams were fast approaching, so I wasn't surprised. I looked around and spotted a free seat close to the window. I wasn't a fan of window seats because I easily got distracted but I hurried to take this one. Half bread is always better than none.
A guy was beside me. His hands wrapped around his head on the table. He didn't have any books near him. I didn't want to pry so I focused on what I came there for. As I opened my text book, I heard a loud sniff come from him, followed by little shoulder spasms. "This is weird", I told myself. Was he crying?
"Exscuse me," I asked, confused. "Are you okay?"
The sniffing stopped. His shoulders dropped but his head was still on the table. I summoned enough courage to really study him. He looked familiar, but I couldn't really place him since I wasn't seeing his face. I noticed he carried a blue sling-on bag. There was a familiar writing on it in yellow thread, that I remembered seeing somewhere. It read: "Jesus Fanatic."
Then it hit me! I knew where I had seen the bag before. I knew who was carrying the bag. I knew who owned the bag. And I knew who was sitting beside me!
"Bro. Charles?!" I gasped.
His hands left his head and he raised his head up a little bit. I swallowed nervously. This was the guy that God had used to save me. The guy who prayed like heaven should fall. Our former prayer warrior. The same Bro Charles that everyone had been worried about. Why had he been crying?
"Umm..." I continued. "I'm Rukewe. I attend the same campus fellowship as you, but you probably don't know me. Are you okay? Do you need something?"
He didn't answer for a long while and I almost died from waiting so long.
"I'm okay." He finally replied. He rubbed his eyes against his sleeve and finally raised his head.
His eyes were red and had dark circles under it. He looked like he hadn't slept for days.
Since he wasn't saying anything, I took that as my cue to ask what I'd always wanted to ask.
"We've not been seeing you at the fellowship for sometime. Is everything okay?"
He took a deep breath, managed to smile and stood up to take his leave. I was confused. Why would he just get up and go?
"Bro Charles! Wait!" I walked briskly after him.
He didn't wait. He kept on moving. His strides were longer than mine, I was finding it hard to catch up with him. Then an idea came to me.
"I got born-again because of you!" I shouted. He stopped, as I expected.
"I used to be a rebel. I was a terrible sinner who didn't give a damn about God, until..."
He turned around, anxious. "Until what?"
"Until I met you." I walked slowly to his side.
"I had been seeing you around on Campus and you carried a Presence that fascinated me and caught my attention."
He furrowed his eyebrows in obvious confusion.
"I kind of eavesdropped on you when you were praying at the chapel. I've been stalking you ever since, actually. I wanted to be like you and have that Presence you carried about. When I heard your prayers the first time, I was moved to pray and find peace with a God I had long forsaken or never even really knew. I gave my life to Christ some weeks back and God used you to reach me in the only way that He would get my attention."
He just stood there. Too stunned to speak.
"I became worried when I stopped seeing you at the fellowship and at chapel. I really wanted to know what happened, so I prayed to God to help me understand what happened to the person He used to save me. God answered that prayer today. I didn't even realize you were the one sitting beside me in the library."
"Really?" He said quietly. There was no missing the sadness in his voice and eyes and I wondered for the umpteenth time, what could be wrong.
